PLAY: Sea Kayaking Tour from Stykkisholmur Review

At home, I’ve kayaked a few times and absolutely loved it. There is something so incredibly calming about paddling on the open water, and when I was presented the opportunity to kayak across the Breidafjordur Bay with Arctic Adventures, I couldn’t contain my excitement.

Located in the gorgeous seaside village of Stykishholmur, the Arctic Adventures kayaking is one like you’ve never done before. Stykkishomur is located in the Snaefellsnes peninsula, and is known as the centre of services and commerce for the area. It’s a beautiful little village, and if you’ve got time I’d definitely suggest taking a walk around the pier and exploring the rustic buildings.

We met our guide, Kristjan, at the Arctic Adventures office and hopped into the awesome ‘Kayakmobile’. We headed to the shed where we put on our epic kayaking gear (a tad retro which made it even cooler!) then headed back into the kayakmobile for a quick drive to the kayaks. We selected our kayaks and had a quick safety refresher with Kristjan, who was an excellent leader and also super funny.

We then hopped into the water, and that’s where the real adventure started. The water was super cold and clear, with loads of sealife evident. From startling bright starfish to Icelandic birds galore, the place we kayaked was truly stunning.

As we paddled through the icy cold water, Kristjan explained a bit about the history of the lake and pointed out so many amazing things to us. My favourite part was when we paused on the water and let our kayaks drift a little while we watched the Icelandic birds. They were similar to seagulls at home except double the size and much more interesting to watch.

We passed an incredible old shipwreck that made it feel like we were in a Pirates of the Caribbean, and just WOW. We had the opportunity to physically paddle underneath it, and it was just so insanely special. A massive thank you to our awesome guide Kristjan, I can't recommend kayaking in Stykkisholmur with Arctic Adventures more!
