REVIEW: Fallen Angel Cornwall
In a far-flung corner of the UK lies one of the most well-hidden private retreats in the world. I was recently invited to stay at Fallen Angel Cornwall over a wintery English weekend with my partner, and this is my take on the UK’s most luxurious hideaway.
One word: tranquillity. Actually, many words: decadent, luxurious, relaxing, private, secluded, calming, beautiful, peaceful… the list could go on.
Nestled in the slopes of Mousehole, Penzance, Fallen Angel Cornwall is the most unique property I’ve ever stayed in. It’s your own private oasis that overlooks the sea, accessible only by foot – meaning it’s incredibly secluded and quiet.
Designed by Studio West Architects, Fallen Angel Cornwall will truly stun anyone that enters. The building has its own sub-tropical gardens, and is built into the slopes of the hills to provide panoramic views of Mounts Bay. The interior has skylights and large windows everywhere possible, providing a plethora of natural light and feeling of space.
The footprint of the original two buildings that once sat upon the hill are joined by a stair tunnel, that takes visitors from day to night. The upstairs level consists of an open plan kitchen and lounge room, with a laundry, TV nook, balcony and coat room - complete with SONOS sound system and an outdoor fire pit.
The fireplace is modern, and heats up the room in approximately 5 seconds. Fireplaces not your thing? Not to worry, the underfloor heating will keep you at optimal temperature the entire time. Beautiful tiles adorn the kitchen, and the dusty pink colour palette spills into the lounge room.
The plush sofas are extremely comfortable, and are the type that once you sit down, you won’t want to get back up again. As you walk downs the stairs, you’re instantly transported into the heart of the Fallen Angel Cornwall.
Staggered in front of the upper deck rather than directly below, the open-plan master bedroom is breath-taking. Complete with a large waterfall shower for two (bigger than most London bedrooms!), a cloud-like King bed and stand-alone tin-lined cooper bath, it’s really something special.
I’m not going to lie, we only left the house once, and that was for a quick breakfast run. There was already fresh bread, jam, milk and elderflower supplied (all local produce!), so we grabbed some local eggs and bacon and set ourselves up.
I’ve been fortunate to stay in quite a few five star resorts around the world, but nothing has ever left me feeling so relaxed and at peace. Furthermore, it is easily the most romantic place for two. It’s designed for honeymooners and lovebirds, and every aspect of the design is perfectly suited for two.
Once you set foot in Fallen Angel Cornwall, you just won’t want to leave. Whether it’s the stunning view, decadent under-floor heating or generous wood burner that takes your fancy, you’ll fall in love with this luxurious escape. They’re even running a winter special which is £525 for 3 nights from November to 31 March! This is such a bargain considering you’d pay this for a one night stay at some fancy 5 star hotels – and this exceeds all of them!
