Pearls of Wisdom from Natalie Scanlon

There's nothing better than finding like minded women that share the same passions, goals and dreams for life. When you run into someone like this, hold them tightly and never let them go. I was lucky enough to meet Nat via an incredible women's group I'm part of, and since then she's filled my life with utter joy. We've never physically had the pleasure of meeting, but Nat is the most encouraging, kindest soul I've ever had the pleasure of connecting with. I'm incredibly excited to introduce you all to this intelligent, fierce and inspiration woman, that all of us #galswithgoals can learn from.

Thanks for interviewing with us. We'd love to know more about you, your background and way of life.

I am one-and-a-half years short of 30, with an intimidating personality that people either love or hate. A county girl at heart, who loves wearing Timberlands to local footy games on icy, cold Saturday afternoons just to have a hot milo. My passion is words; my soul is the beach; and my family is my universe and beyond. I can completely suffocate you with my love; or become completely disengaged because our values differ. There is no in-between and this is a flaw of mine; and something that I am working on. I am passionately motivated by social justice, human rights and helping others. I completely and utterly believe that enjoyment comes from helping create a culture of forward thinking, creativity and encouragement. This is stemmed from helping those around you, no matter where you are or what you do.

Coffee, freshly squeezed juice or a glass of wine?

Does a white wine double espresso count?

Where do you find inspiration for your goals & dreams?

My daughter is my driving force and the inspiration behind both my successes, and my attempts at success after experiencing failure. My mum and my nan and their tears, triumphs, fight and determination inspire me to achieve my goals and be the best that I can be. And as crazy as it sounds, the haters, the non-believers and the nay-sayers give me the motivation to go out and achieve my goals and dreams. (Mostly because I am extremely competitive, but also because I love proving people wrong).

What does self love mean to you?

Self love is everything. It makes or breaks your dreams. To me, self love is the one important factor that determines whether or not you live the life you have always wanted. And, it is so, so hard to practice. Loving your self (your true self) takes time and strength. Self love is difficult and encouraging, uncomfortable and exhilarating. It is as confronting as it is blissful. A true paradox.

What is something that not many people know about you?

I am unconditionally in love with the sweet, sweet sound of Pete Murray's voice. His music is my go-to when I need to recharge and get back to 'me'.

What is your favourite quote, and why?

'In a world that profits from your self doubt, loving yourself is a rebellious act'. - Unknown

This is me in a quote. This is everything I stand for. Everything that I work for. Everything that I want to show and teach my daughter. I am passionate about using self-love to create a more positive world; and what better way than to completely ridicule society's acceptance of self doubt as a social norm?!

What advice would you give your younger self?

"Nat: break the rules, embrace the heartbreak (it will work out), continue being kind to everyone, and DO NOT pluck your eyebrows. I REPEAT. DO NOT pluck your eyebrows"

* the eyebrows point is definitely the one that has had the most impact! Haha!

What's on the horizon for your future? Are any exciting plans coming up?

Just recently I have been able to meet an amazing business mentor who has completely changed my life. He has taken a risk, and trusted my business ideas so that I can professionally develop and achieve my business goals. This has anxiously excited me. I am excited for what is to come; and I am frightened of the unknown.

Dogs or cats?

Dogs. I have a 7 month old chocolate lab called Eddie (after Eddie Vedder) who already weighs 37 kg. He is a BIG bear and no cat could compare.

What is your go-to song to get you feeling motivated?

Supremacy- Muse

Who are 3 people you'd recommend following on IG for major inspiration?

@Lisamessenger - there is no substitute for passion, and passion is what Lisa Messenger has! I love her work, and I am constantly inspired by her love of work too!

@ariannahuff - copious amounts of positive, motivational words that us word-nerds live by.

@jakewarden - This is the Instagram account of a 15-year-old boy who is the most talented make-up artist I have ever seen. He stays true to himself, and is such an inspiration. I love seeing people doing what they love, being honest and true to themselves, and allowing the whole world to experience this too!! I just love him!
