How to stop emotional eating

It's no secret that we turn to food in our time of need. Whether you're going through a nasty break-up, mourning the loss of a loved one or simply just feeling down; food becomes your best friend.

Like most, I'll turn to the foods that I vowed never to eat - cake, chocolate, chips, ice-cream. Anything that is sugary, fatty or greasy looks incredible when you're feeling depressed.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. Emotional eating will NOT cure whatever unfortunate scenario or emotion you're experiencing. In fact.. it's going to make you feel worse!

When we turn to these awful foods, the more we have, the more we crave. We end up stuffing ourselves full of Mcdonalds while we are thinking the whole time "No No No NO NO NO!!!!".

Why do we do it? Some may think there is definitely more satisfying about chomping into a big mac than an apple, but this isn't true! We emotionally eat because food becomes our best friend, hugging us with it's carby tentacles and fatty fingers.

This needs to stop. Emotional eating leads to three certain things - weight gain, lack of self confidence and higher dependency on these horrible foods. Believe me, we've all been there... hugging the chocolate ice cream container as you take your 20th scoop crying "WHY ME!?".

In times like these, we need to look to the future. Focus on all the good things that are in your life. Your incredible friends, family, pets, favourite movie or song. Write down a list of everything that you makes you feel good.

It's time to drop the junk food and pick up a new attitude. I want you to think of all the things you are grateful for.. let these become the focus of your life for however long you need.

Next time you reach for the last slice of that cheese pizza or the ice cream scoop, just remember it's not going to help. Instead of reaching for food - reach for your friends and family!

Below is a list of foods that you CAN emotionally eat. Because let's face it, you need to eat sometime and these are the perfect foods to get you through your day!

Foods you SHOULD emotionally eat
- 'Me-time' Balls (recipe is on my blog)
- Herbal teas
- Fruit
- Nuts
- Big salads that are full of goodness!
- Quest bars (because who doesn't want a healthy alternative to cookies!)

Experiment in the kitchen with healthy ingredients! I often find when I focus on my health and fitness, my thoughts change completely. Try to forget about whatever is upsetting you, and go enjoy the sunshine (or the snow depending on where you're from). I know it can be hard... but we're women! We can do ANYTHING when we put our minds to it.
