The Paleo Debate

PALEO... What the heck is that?! I'm sure you've heard this odd word muttered amongst those of us that are health conscious and constantly trying to lose weight, but what actually is the Paleo lifestyle, and does it work?!

What is the Paleo Lifestyle?
The Paleo lifestyle is based on what our ancestors used to survive on every day. According to Loren Cordain, author of 'The Paleo Diet for Athletes', "Seventy percent of the typical U.S diet is foods that our Stone Age ancestors wouldn't have consumed". It is often known as The Caveman diet, and is known for it's high meat consumption and nearly no consumption of grains and dairy. There is a really, really easy way to eat Paleo - before you eat something, have a long, hard look at it. Would this delicious (insert your food's name) have been around 10,000 years ago? If the answer is NO, then it doesn't fit the constraints of the Paleo lifestyle.

FOODS THAT YOU CAN EAT:
- Nearly all types of meat. AVOID any over processed meat e.g hot dogs or spam.
- All vegetables, although in saying this avoid having too much starchy veggies like potato & squash.
- All types of oils - though aim for coconut, macadamia or avocado oils that have added health benefits!
- All types of nuts. REMEMBER peanuts are not actually classified as nuts, they are legumes which are a big no-no on the Paleo diet!
- Fruits, fruits and more fruits! Be careful though, because even though fruit is super awesome for your body, some have high sugar levels that can hinder weightloss.

I'm not going to make a list of foods you're not supposed to eat, because it really is endless. Many people argue that there are several different health benefits of following a Paleo diet, while others are completely opposed to the very idea of it.
